Kofi Annan: His Life and Legacy – 3 June 2019 Central Hall Westminster, London

UNA-UK organized this inspiring and thoughtful public event celebrating former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Anan. The event was preceded by a full day conference at Chatham House, home of the Royal Institute of International Affairs: ‘Our Shared Humanity’: The Legacy of Kofi Annan.*

Author Steven Pinker holds that, against news reports to the contrary, the world is actually improving. And he has the data to prove it. This is the thesis of his 2018 book, Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress (Penguin Books). In a talk at the United Nations Bookstore in New York on 20 May, 2019, Prof. Pinker, who teaches psychology at Harvard University, explained why he believes that the world is getting better, and he analyzed the role that the United Nations (U.N.) has played in its betterment.

When Kofi Annan retired as Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2006 after a decade of service, he left almost a million documents to the United Nations Library in New York. These documents—comprising Mr. Annan’s official remarks, statements, and reports, as well as his declassified letters, handwritten notes, and memos—are now available online through an electronic platform created by the City College of New York (CCNY).

The global compact for migration is the first, intergovernmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, to cover all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. Following extensive consultations, a text for the Compact has been agreed and is to be adopted at an Intergovernmental Conference in Marrakech, Morocco, 10 – 11 December this year.
