Faith, Creativity and the Inner Life

Hello everyone and thank you Michael for suggesting such a rich and thought provoking subject for me to ponder and share, especially as we work with the astrological energies of Cancer, with its seed thought, “I build a lighted house and therein dwell.”

I think we would all agree that the crises in our world today call upon the steadfastness of our faith and inner strength. A stability that DK expresses in Discipleship in the New Age Vol. I (p. 668) as, “the power to stand unmoving…in the midst of changing circumstance.”

In the “Reflective Meditation for Money for Hierarchical Purposes,” given to us by the Tibetan it states a truth from the World Teacher, “He for Whom the whole world waits has said that whatsoever shall be asked in His Name and with faith in the response will see it accomplished.” It then continues with the well known phrase from the Book of Hebrews, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen.” DK has also asked us to substitute the word faith with the word light and so it becomes, “Light is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.”

Light and consciousness… as substance and evidence.

Our meditation work we are told is the method par excellence of the co-creative process of service. Through the building of the Antahkarana, that which connects the human family with Hierarchy and then Shamballa , we are participating in the spiritualization of matter, the future goal of our Earth becoming a sacred planet.

And so we might ask ourselves, how are we to navigate all we are going through as we shift into the new Aquarian Age? How do we stand steady in the light?

Again from Discipleship in the New Age Volume I (p.116)   “It calls for a higher quality of faith and courage.” Our spiritual usefulness lies in the unfoldment of the creative imagination through visualization. Also we read (DINA 1 p. 91) the power to visualize correctly is one definite mode of ascertaining truth or falsity. “Visualization is literally the building of the bridge between the emotional or astral plane and the mental level.”

A helpful seed thought used in the Arcane School studies comes to mind, “The present embodies all the past, the future depends upon the clear seeing of the immediate vision.” The power to visualize is the form building aspect of the creative imagination.

Throughout the ages enlightened soul-infused women and men who have had an unshakeable faith are deeply connected to their Divinity. Their Divine essence, their Christ-nature is recognized not only in themselves but in all that IS. When we recognize the beauty that surrounds us, in a sunrise, in a beautiful work of art, in a child’s smile, and even in suffering and grief- our faith grows.

In Irish philosopher John O’Donohue’s book, The Invisible Embrace of Beauty, he writes, “In a sense all the contemporary crises can be reduced to a crisis about the nature of beauty.” He goes on, “It has become the habit of our times to mistake glamour for beauty.” Beauty is deeply akin to the soul, as is faith. Russian artist and disciple, Nicholas Roerich has much to say about Beauty. “Beneath the sign of Beauty we walk joyfully. With Beauty we conquer. Through Beauty we pray. In Beauty we are united.”

My own life of service has been dedicated to the creative process through dance, art and writing. The steps are much the same as our meditation work, alignment, intention, visualization, and repetition. Dancers for example perform many exercises in their daily class ritual before they can perform for an audience. Translating the choreographer’s intentions into beauty takes great discipline. Step by step dancers create a form or vessel in which spirit and soul can precipitate into matter. Artists provide inspiration that can help us keep our faith alive. And also from Nicholas Roerich, “Through Art thou hast the Light.”

Working with faith and creativity we are cautioned not to expect results from our work. Patience and perseverance are key. Long periods of time can pass without any tangible results and yet, we must keep the faith and keep on keeping on. Such is also the path of discipleship and initiation. A disciple knows because he works and not the other way around.

It can be very frustrating at times. Some may simply give up. One thinks of world servers like Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned for 27 years and never gave up his faith. Or Martin Luther King who fought tirelessly for racial equality and never gave up.  This took a deep belief in the good, the true and the beautiful.

Also sacrifice, whose root word is sacer, to make whole or holy, is fundamentally an expression of faith. One of the greatest examples we have of a life of service and sacrifice, of keeping the flame of faith alive, is the Master Jesus, who we have been told was overshadowed by the Christ. We know he endured great suffering and that he had a period of the dark night and of doubt in his mission on Earth. Yet he went on to fulfill his sacred destiny. He widened the rents of the veils hiding the Light and he showed through his resurrection a fundamental truth-there is abundant life after physical death.

The Sanskrit word for faith is Shraddha. It’s derived from 2 words. Shrad meaning truth or faithfulness. And Dha which translates “to put or place: to direct one’s mind towards.” Faith blooms when the mind directs itself toward a deep seated truth, a knowing. And this speaks of the higher mind which we know is both heart and mind knowledge. Faith arises from what we deeply believe is true. Faith lies at the foundation of our being.

In the Bhagavad Gita Chapter 17, Krishna says that faith results from our most steadfast convictions and that truth as we perceive it goes hand in hand with faith. “Let reality govern my every thought; and truth be the master of my life.”

Good practice or meditation takes this faith, as in sounding the Great Invocation. As we work with our Triangle partners and the world wide group of Triangles, we are invoking the substances of Light, Love and the Will-to Good, at first unseen. But as we invoke and then evoke, these energies are precipitated into our world and to Humanity.

“May Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.”
