Subtle Activism — A Tool for Planetary Healing

For the past several years, I have participated nearly every day in a group meditation, broadcast or webinar through the Lucis Trust, the ASK-PROJECT of the Morya Federation, 2025 Initiative, and Esoteric Advent. These include the Triangles Meditation, full and new moon meditations, those that focus on the U. N. Sustainable Development Goals, meditations for the dissipation of glamour, the soul of nations and some for specific issues (such as Brexit) or planetary crises.

The Subtle Activism inherent in our group work has helped me stay grounded and sane in these chaotic times, gaining some detachment and perspective on our world problems. I am able to engage in direct physical activism with greater enthusiasm and a sense of hope and empowerment as I experience the power of the group and the support of our subtle allies.

Generally, the term Subtle Activism is used to describe a group process or activity that uses the power of thought, intention and love to positively influence and support collective political action, planetary healing and social transformation. Subtle Activism can be present in a variety of consciousness or spiritually based approaches such as group meditation, prayer, visualization, ritual, chanting, and ceremonies. People have participated in healing meditations and group prayer for eons of time. What is different about Subtle Activism is that it combines group prayer and meditation and our work with the subtle environment with direct activism in the outer world. They complement one another, creating a more holistic and effective approach to addressing our common problems and the crises we face. It is never a substitute for physical activism and it is important that we do both.

Subtle Activism is a form of service. It uses the power of group meditation and prayer to unify and magnify our individual efforts to contact and invoke subtle energies and beings and to evoke a greater flow of light, love, goodwill and healing energy into our lives and onto our planet. Through group meditation we seek to co-create and manifest thought forms of solutions for planetary healing. We address solutions to the problems of global poverty, hunger, decent work, and quality education. Our intention is to work for the highest good of all in accordance with evolutionary purpose and Plan. We are not attached to the outcome of the work and understand that we may not see the results of our actions, but we trust they are occurring. We address world crises as well as support the positive efforts taking place in global conferences, important political elections and the work of the United Nations.

Subtle Activists acknowledge, respect and collaborate with the subtle half, the non-physical world or what David Spangler calls, the “subtle ecology”. These are the beings and energies that most of us cannot see but who are our allies and seek to help us heal ourselves and our planet. They are part of the Great Chain of Being, the other kingdoms of nature on the ladder of life, including the angelic and deva kingdoms. Subtle Activism may include work with the spirits of a place, the angel over-lighting a city during a natural disaster, the soul of a nation, or the Spiritual Hierarchy during new and full moon meditations and important meetings at the U. N.

David Spangler, in A Mini-Manual For Doing Subtle Activism, suggests two principles that are key to doing Subtle Activism. 1) We don’t impose our “way” or energies upon a situation or being. 2) We embody the qualities we “send”.

David Nicol’s book, Subtle Activism: The Inner Dimension of Social and Planetary Transformation, is considered the first comprehensive academic treatment of Subtle Activism.    In his book, Nicol states, “The claim of subtle activism is that the use of spiritual or consciousness-based practices intended to support collective transformation can have a subtle, positive, nonlocal effect on worldly events” ( Nicol, D. p, 82 ). He defines, “the phenomenon of nonlocality as the direct interaction between two objects or entities separated by space (or time), with no intermediate agency or mechanism” ( Nicol,  D.,  p. 81). The claim that nonlocal effects of prayer or thought at a distance are possible is controversial because we don’t yet have a scientific way of understanding them. Scientists have not yet proven the existence of the etheric field.

Students of the Ageless Wisdom teachings know that “energy follows thought is the basis of all occult practice” (Bailey, A. ,DINA II, p. 687) and that telepathy is thought transference over the ethers. We know that the etheric web of our planet is the vital energy vehicle that interpenetrates and interrelates all that exists on our planet and the universe. It is the means through which our thoughts vibrate and circulate throughout the entire etheric world (Jurriaanse, A., Bridges, p 343).  The etheric field is the universal connective tissue. We know and act as if distance makes no difference, and our thoughts and the quality of our presence can affect the probability of outcomes.

Subtle Activism is a growing movement arising out of humanity’s attempt to respond to the growing ecological, political, economic and spiritual crises of our time, including the threats of nuclear weapons, climate change and the undermining of democracy and the rule of law. Many of us have found that the usual tools for direct physical activism such as writing letters, making phone calls to our representatives, participating in marches and demonstrations are no longer working or are not enough to help us solve our common problems. We need to ask for help and seek the collaboration of each other and our subtle allies.

The internet and the development of the global communications infrastructure have enhanced and amplified our ability to contact and communicate with each other; to have spontaneous, unanimous and simultaneous meditations and communication.

Through the internet and Subtle Activism activities we will develop group consciousness, telepathic rapport, overcome any sense of separation, begin to see ourselves as one human family, learn to be in right relationship with all life, and realize planetary consciousness.

My participation in these Subtle Activism events has connected me with my global co-workers. We have established continuity of contact and unity of purpose and direction. I have experienced joy and gratitude for the generous sharing of knowledge, wisdom and resources of our global group members. I know there is always something we can do and others who will help. I encourage all of you to participate in these wonderful opportunities to collectively co-create and manifest planetary consciousness and planetary healing.
