Ranging from mild displeasure or restlessness to anxiety or even intense vexation, discontent arises from a multitude of sources and appears to come from all directions when nothing seems right. Often being such a fractious state of emotional turmoil, it is difficult to see how it could be a welcome part of life. This is especially so because, at first glance, such discontent may well seem to ruin any chance of ever achieving a truly peaceful spiritual life as it may be imagined. Whatever is imagined, however, at some point, sooner or later, there is a recognition that the spiritual life is not one that is lacking in discontent. On the contrary, spiritual evolution is filled with discontent, and not just that, but that this uncomfortable experience is essential.
Of course, discontent does not need to be a fractious state. Whether it arises from conflicting conditions within the individual self or relates more to environmental factors, the attitude to the situation, to a large extent, determines how it is perceived and what potential results may come from it. When a mental focus is achieved, there is greater perspective, and it is with such detachment that the consciousness can rise above tumultuous emotions. Much of the suffering falls away, too. An even clearer and wider perspective can be achieved when a measure of soul consciousness is accessed: for the soul, life is experience, movement and change – the opportunity to express qualities and values and to acquire greater skill in action. All experience then is valuable if it is regarded as potential education, and if its lessons can be fathomed and their meaning assimilated, then the experience is part of a redemptive progression.
Spiritual teachings say that this recurring discontent arises from the inherent and irresistible urge towards betterment within each human being. This divine discontent emerges from an inner awareness of a glorious destiny beyond the human state of consciousness. The urge towards betterment may initially express itself selfishly and in seeking material improvements, but this path eventually becomes a spiritual one. In esoteric terms this is the path of initiation, part of the divine plan for humanity to evolve creatively. It is also the ultimate path of redemption, for each lesson mastered is eventually exchanged for its next higher aspect of a rising spiral of spiritual attainment.
