One humanity, one soul

The following talk was given in the Triangles webinar on July 9, 2018:

Compared to even 100 years ago, the world has changed beyond measure – spiritually, psychologically and physically. The breaking down of barriers in consciousness, the proliferation of movements dedicated to human and animal welfare, the growing influence of the group of world servers, the instantaneous broadcast of news in real time bringing the world ever closer, the increasing population, the ease of travel from one corner of the earth to the other, and everywhere in between. The movement of peoples across continents, borders, and nation states is unprecedented (probably since the end of the Second World War). The constant flow of peoples escaping war, persecution, famine, and economic deprivation; of people travelling to all areas of the world on business or leisure; people living and working in different countries. This flux, this constant mutation, this evolving and unfolding state of restlessness, and this whittling away at the (of the) status quo, is bringing about the birth of a new order: one humanity, one soul. The established norms, the antiquated practices, the crystallised shells of the old order, reel at the thundering pace of evolution. The only permanency in this relentless march is change: in consciousness, in attitudes, in acceptable standards, in borders, in international relations, and as one profound spiritual Philosopher noted: “The outer change is producing an inner synthesis”.

But with these monumental and momentous developments, the spectre of growing nationalism, intolerance, and separative thinking is surfacing again, whipped up by selfseeking and powerful selfish individuals who tap into the undercurrent of fear and narrowminded thinking. That is not to say that people’s genuine and sincere concerns of change on inner and outer levels should not be addressed, discussed and handled wisely and with understanding, but wanton prejudice, discrimination, intolerance and complete disregard of the needs and well-being of others is quite simply wrong.

Even though the media can often portray the state of human affairs as chaotic, selfish and in an indifferent manner, on inner levels there is probably taking place a broadening of consciousness and what has been described as the bringing about and cultivation of “the diverse gifts of the many people to the world soul”. To the soul, whether individual, group, national or that of humanity itself, there is unity in diversity, synthesis in multiplicity. Each part an intrinsic and indispensable link in the Whole. To the soul, there is no uniformity, in the traditional sense of the term but rather an organic and evolutionary development in consciousness that reflects the innate goodness of the inner worlds in the outer worlds, and the recognition that each life is an essential element in the great tapestry of Being, with its own distinctive note, colour and quality.

When the Christ, the World Teacher, reappears it is quite probable that He will visit those living in desperate conditions throughout the world. Those starving in many countries whose economies have collapsed due to war, famine, political in-fighting, or financial mismanagement, the many millions in refugee camps who have fled violence and the mayhem of war, those living in the favelas, the inner and outer city slums, where so many of our fellow human beings eke out an existence in conditions not fit for human habitation. No doubt the Christ will affirm the dignity, nobility and sanctity of human life, the worth and value in spiritual terms of each and all, and which the world ignores at great cost to itself. 2000 years ago, the Christ said: “I come not to bring peace but a sword” – a sword that cuts through the distorted and selfish thinking to reveal the eternal truths for the good of all and not just a select few.

Perhaps, the response of the world to the migration crisis is a wake up call. It is evoking the best and the worst in human nature and is bringing about much soul searching. Many see them as the ‘flotsam and jetsam’ of human life, remote, peripheral, and not their concern. But, the world is becoming such a small community of nations and peoples, that we avoid these challenges and wise handling at our peril. And, their will come a point, when the settled will and resolve of the human family, will recognise that every human being should enjoy the basics of human life, such as food, housing, education, and medical facilities, free from the grind of daily living, so that everyone can live with dignity. In this way all can learn to live creatively, develop naturally as human beings, and contribute to the greater Whole.

In the wake of these profound developments there is a process “of blending and amalgamation such as the world has never seen before”. And, out of this kaleidoscope of colours, thoughts, opinions, cultures, religions, and political perspectives will emerge the awakening in consciousness of the one humanity, and the one soul, and to this end we work in Triangles.
