The Great Invocation

The following remarks were broadcast on the Triangles Webinar on June 12, 2017:

World Invocation Day, observed for the past 65 years at the time of the Gemini full moon, was commemorated this past Friday, June 9th. Each year on that day people of all spiritual and religious persuasions all over the world come together in thought to sound the Great Invocation in the hope of summoning the higher spiritual energies expressed in this beautiful prayer and so needed by humanity at this time of great challenge and crisis. The Great Invocation is also the central focus of our service in Triangles, for in this work we sound the Invocation with our Triangles partners and with the global Triangles network of which we are a part with the intention to summon the energies of Light, Love, and Will for the benefit of the planet.

The initial two verses of the Great Invocation were given to humanity in 1935 and 1940. In 1945 the third verse, the one we recite in our Triangles work, was imparted. Since that time the Invocation has been widely distributed and used throughout the world, translated into more than 80 languages. The Invocation was presented to humanity with the hope that it would realign the consciousness of the human race to higher ideals, would stabilize the race in the knowledge of our true essence, and would inspire the belief in a new “planetary thoughtform”, one that envisions a finer and more inclusive society for all.

The first stanza of the Great Invocation refers to “the Mind of God” as a focus for light. These lines concern “the soul of all things”, for the soul is light—and the soul’s light is bestowed on us as understanding, insight, recognition, revelation, and wisdom. The second stanza makes reference to “the Heart of God” as a focus for love. This stanza pertains to the Spiritual Hierarchy, that great center of love for the planet where the spiritual Guides for the race are to be found. It is an appeal for the divine energy of love, the basic need of all life forms. The third stanza relates to “the Will of God” and to the concept of a purposeful life. This stanza alludes to Shamballa, the highest spiritual center of the planet. And the fourth stanza pertains to the human race and to humanity’s duty to materialize the Plan for the race by securing the energies of Light, Love, and the Will-to-Good within the minds and hearts of the people.

The purpose of the Great Invocation is to invoke the appearance of a “divine Intermediary”, a sacred Messenger to guide humanity. This appeal is voiced in the second stanza of the Invocation in the words “May the Coming One return to Earth.” The advent of a great Messenger or Avatar has been predicted and anticipated by men and women all over the world who await the Coming One—known variously as the Christ, the Maitreya, the Boddhisattva, the Imam Mahdi. And always, at the time of greatest need, when the supplication of the masses is one of urgency, that divine Saviour has appeared to act as a mediator between humanity and God. Repeatedly, history has affirmed the presence of such a One who has inspired humanity with new ideologies and new systems of faith, and who has left behind the promise of return.

A prerequisite for the appearance of a “divine Intermediary” is the achievement of right human relations. Although that may appear to be unattainable at this time of seeming widespread differences and disputes between men and nations, this time in human history is also one of expansive global communication and collaboration with regard to human welfare and planetary progress. The power and influence of groups working worldwide for the good of the whole is a precursor to the new inclusive society that will bloom forth in the decades to come, and it is an indication that the appearance of a Coming One is imminent.

The Great Invocation is a group prayer for the Aquarian Age and is a prayer of deep significance for all of humanity. When sounded from a pure heart filled with love, from a controlled mind, and with right understanding and conscious intent, it becomes powerfully effective in bringing about needed change, in eliminating that which no longer serves the race, and in constructing forms that will better contribute to a new era of goodwill and unity. The words of the Invocation—and the O.M. and all Words of Power—are most effective if sounded from the soul, propelled by love and motivated by group good. Sounded in this way, the potency of the thoughtforms is enhanced and will produce the anticipated results.

Humanity today is becoming aware of the soul as the directing power underlying outer manifested existence. This awareness is demonstrated in man’s sensitive response to the world situation, in efforts to promote freedom and right conditions for all members of the race, in compassion for man’s suffering, and in an attitude of stewardship for the earth and all life forms upon it. Such response is evidence of humanity’s budding soul and of the race’s growing capacity to manage higher energies such as those invoked in the Great Invocation. The heartfelt demands of the Invocation will evoke the promised future and the presence of Hierarchy Itself and will bring about the manifestation in outer form of the subjective energies of the soul.
